The organisers of the conference on Higher Education for Peace in
Tromsø, 4 – 6 May 2000 would like to remind participants,
contributors, and in particular invited speakers of the following
objectives, which we will also set as 'terms of reference' for the
conference:

Our objectives are

  • to encourage and challenge all institutions of higher education to analyse their own roles and their potential as peace builders and promoters of human rights.
  • to exemplify how peace issues are, or may be, included in different kinds of higher education.
  • to develop and share ideas on the content of education and methods which enable students and staff - and other professionals - to participate in practical peace work.
  •  to focus on the interdependence between higher education and research, and the need to use and expand expertise in peace and human rights education.
  • to discuss how such teaching programmes and learning processes may challenge and bridge the traditional divide between theory and practice in institutions of higher education.
  •  to highlight the impact of higher education on the entire education system.
  • to combine and share knowledge, experience, values and visions in ways that will begin to transform a culture of war into a culture of peace.
