The organisers of the conference on Higher Education
for Peace in
Tromsø, 4 – 6 May 2000 would like to remind
participants,
contributors, and in particular invited speakers
of the following
objectives, which we will also set as 'terms
of reference' for the
conference:
Our objectives are
to encourage and challenge all institutions of higher
education to analyse their own roles and their potential as peace builders
and promoters of human rights.
to exemplify how peace issues are, or may be, included
in different kinds of higher education.
to develop and share ideas on the content of education
and methods which enable students and staff - and other professionals -
to participate in practical peace work.
to focus on the interdependence between higher
education and research, and the need to use and expand expertise in peace
and human rights education.
to discuss how such teaching programmes and learning
processes may challenge and bridge the traditional divide between theory
and practice in institutions of higher education.
to highlight the impact of higher education
on the entire education system.
to combine and share knowledge, experience, values
and visions in ways that will begin to transform a culture of war into
a culture of peace.
